Summary

"In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few。" So begins this most beloved of all American Zen books。 Seldom has such a small handful of words provided a teaching as rich as has this famous opening line of Shunryu Suzuki's classic。 In a single stroke, the simple sentence cuts through the pervasive tendency students have of getting so close to Zen as to completely miss what it's all about。 An instant teaching on the first page。 And that's just the beginning。

In the thirty years since its original publication, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind has become one of the great modern Zen classics, much beloved, much re-read, and much recommended as the best first book to read on Zen。 Suzuki Roshi presents the basics—from the details of posture and breathing in zazen to the perception of nonduality—in a way that is not only remarkably clear, but that also resonates with the joy of insight from the first to the last page。 It's a book to come back to time and time again as an inspiration to practice。

A lot to take in。 Trying to gain basic understanding of quieting my mind, being still, emptying my mind。 So many parallels to Christianity。 Stress is wanting things to be different than they are。 Breathing in and out visualizing a swinging door。 Visualizing mind waves as waves that will calm。 I will return to this book many times。

Repetitive at times, but what it says bears repeating。

Highly recommended for all audiences。 Wish I had read this decades ago。 初心 = “beginner’s mind” (or beginner’s heart/spirit if we are being literal)。 In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities。 In the expert’s mind, there are few。 When your mind is compassionate, it is boundless。 A master that cannot bow to his disciple cannot bow to Buddha。 Real calmness should be found in activity。 Appreciate what I am doing now。 There is no preparation for something else [eternity is now]。 Do somethi Highly recommended for all audiences。 Wish I had read this decades ago。 初心 = “beginner’s mind” (or beginner’s heart/spirit if we are being literal)。 In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities。 In the expert’s mind, there are few。 When your mind is compassionate, it is boundless。 A master that cannot bow to his disciple cannot bow to Buddha。 Real calmness should be found in activity。 Appreciate what I am doing now。 There is no preparation for something else [eternity is now]。 Do something new。 Only reflect on the past—do not hold onto it。 。。。more

I’ll be honest and say that this is so much that I did NOT get out of this book。 I read it as more of a tourist than a student, and I am sure that there are nuances and insights that I missed。 Even so, it was still thought provoking。 I didn’t read this book to fully understand Zen, , but I did get a lot in terms of learning how some these approaches could benefit my personal and work life。 A key idea that I walked away with is that the key to learning and mastery is focus on the moment, and not I’ll be honest and say that this is so much that I did NOT get out of this book。 I read it as more of a tourist than a student, and I am sure that there are nuances and insights that I missed。 Even so, it was still thought provoking。 I didn’t read this book to fully understand Zen, , but I did get a lot in terms of learning how some these approaches could benefit my personal and work life。 A key idea that I walked away with is that the key to learning and mastery is focus on the moment, and not thinking about mastery。This is a short book, and reads like what it is: an edited transcript of a Zen Master’s lessons to his students。 While one could read it quickly I got more out of it by reading it in small batches-- this gave me time to think about what the words meant to me。 I don’t feel qualified to speak about how much you’ll learn about Zen reading this book -- though others who are more so have had good things to say。 I can say that if you think I about learning, self reflection, and creativity, this is worth a read if only for the compelling title。 And you may walk away with some insights into Zen Buddhist philosophy。 These may be enough。 Or you may have a desire to learn more。 。。。more
